Viaggio nel Medioevo 2026 — Finalborgo’s Award-Winning Medieval Festival
August 18, 2026 – August 21, 2026
For four nights every August, the walled medieval town of Finalborgo turns back the clock 600 years. Viaggio nel Medioevo (Journey into the Middle Ages) is not just a festival — it’s a full-scale historical immersion that has earned recognition from the Presidency of the Italian Republic for its cultural value. Over the third week of August, Finalborgo’s cobblestone streets fill with artisans, minstrels, fire-eaters, and knights as the town relives its golden age as capital of the Marchesato di Finale.
What Happens
Unlike many Italian medieval festivals that stage a single parade and call it a day, Viaggio nel Medioevo runs four full evenings (typically Tuesday–Friday) with a dense programme of simultaneous events. Key highlights:
- Ancient crafts workshops: Blacksmiths, weavers, potters, and calligraphers demonstrate medieval techniques — many with hands-on opportunities for visitors.
- Historical re-enactments: Sword-fighting displays, archery tournaments, and falconry demonstrations by professional troupes in period costume.
- Medieval market: Dozens of stalls selling handcrafted goods, from leather-bound journals to wrought-iron candleholders.
- Taverns and food: Temporary osterie serve medieval-inspired dishes — think wild boar stew, roast meats, spiced wine (ippocrasso), and honey cakes — all eaten on long wooden tables lit by torchlight.
- Music and street performance: Wandering minstrels, jugglers, and theatrical troupes animate every corner of the borgo.
The Setting
Finalborgo is the medieval heart of Finale Ligure, enclosed within 15th-century walls and dominated by the silhouette of Castel San Giovanni on the hillside above. Its narrow carruggi (alleyways), arched portici, and the imposing Basilica di San Biagio create an atmosphere that needs little embellishment — the festival simply populates it with the sounds, smells, and sights of its medieval past. The result is genuinely transporting.
