On the last Sunday of July, the waters of Sestri Levante come alive with one of the Ligurian Riviera’s most whimsical traditions: the Barcarolata. Now approaching its centenary, this floating spectacle sees dozens of boats transformed into elaborate themed displays — from pirate ships and sea monsters to floating gardens and caricatures of current events — all parading before a delighted crowd along the Baia delle Favole (Bay of Fairy Tales).

A Century-Old Seaside Tradition

The Barcarolata was born in the 1920s, when Sestri Levante’s fishermen and boat owners began decorating their gozzi (traditional Ligurian wooden boats) for impromptu competitions during the summer. After World War II, under the guidance of organiser Giovanni Magnelli, the event evolved into the structured parade and competition it is today. Each crew spends weeks — sometimes months — secretly preparing their float, with themes kept under wraps until the day of the event.

Sestri Levante is uniquely suited to host such a spectacle. The town is built on a peninsula that creates two bays: the Baia delle Favole (Bay of Fairy Tales), named in honour of Hans Christian Andersen who stayed here in 1833, and the quieter Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence). The boat parade takes place in the Baia delle Favole, where the natural amphitheatre of the waterfront promenade provides perfect viewing.

What to Expect

The parade: Starting in the late afternoon (typically around 17:00–18:00), boats of all sizes — gozzi, motorboats, and even small yachts — process through the bay. Each is judged on creativity, craftsmanship, and theme execution. Prizes are awarded in multiple categories, from “most beautiful” to “most humorous.”
The atmosphere: The entire lungomare (seafront promenade) fills with families, photographers, and gelato in hand. It’s a quintessentially Ligurian summer scene — relaxed, joyful, and utterly photogenic.
After dark: As evening falls, many of the illuminated boats remain in the bay, their lights reflecting on the water. Live music often follows at bars along the waterfront.

Practical Tips

Getting there: Sestri Levante station is on the Genoa–La Spezia line, 50 minutes from Genoa, 30 minutes from Cinque Terre. The bay and promenade are a 10-minute walk from the station through the pedestrianised centre.
Best viewing spots: Anywhere along the Lungomare Descalzo on the Baia delle Favole side. Arrive by 16:00 to secure a good spot — the promenade fills up. Alternatively, book a table at a waterfront restaurant for dinner with a view of the parade.
Combine with: Sestri Levante is between the Portofino peninsula and Cinque Terre, making it an ideal base for exploring both. The town’s carruggi, the Bay of Silence at sunset, and the panoramic hike to Punta Manara are all worth your time.
