Confuoco 2026 — Savona’s Ancient Log-Burning Ceremony ‘O Confeugo’

On the last Sunday before Christmas — December 20, 2026 — Savona hosts one of Liguria’s oldest and most distinctive traditions: the Confuoco, known in the local dialect as O Confeugo. It’s a fire ceremony with roots stretching back to medieval times, blending civic ritual, folk superstition, and pageantry in a way that captures the soul of old Liguria.

The Ritual: Fire That Tells the Future

The ceremony centers on a large laurel log — the ceppo — decorated with ribbons and the city’s coat of arms. A historical parade (corteo storico) in medieval costume winds through the streets of the old town, led by flag-throwers, drummers, and civic dignitaries in period dress, before converging on Piazza Sisto IV, Savona’s main square.

At the heart of the ritual, the log is set alight. As the flames rise, a designated reader interprets the auspici (auguries) — reading signs from the way the fire burns, the direction of the smoke, and the crackling of the wood to divine what the coming year holds for the city. Historically, this was a serious business: bad omens from the Confuoco could darken the mood of an entire community. Today, the auguries are delivered with a knowing wink — part tradition, part gentle satire of local politics and events — but the ritual itself remains solemn and beautiful.

The Confuoco is not unique to Savona — versions of the ceremony exist in other Ligurian towns, most notably in Genoa, where the Confeugo has been celebrated since at least the 14th century. But Savona’s version has a more intimate, community-driven feel, held in the shadow of the medieval towers and the Cappella Sistina.
