Festival della Mente 2026 — Sarzana’s Festival of Ideas

September 4, 2026 – September 6, 2026

The Festival della Mente (Festival of the Mind) is Italy’s premier festival dedicated to creativity and intellectual curiosity. Held annually in the beautiful medieval town of Sarzana, it brings together scientists, writers, philosophers, artists, and musicians for three days of talks, workshops, and performances.

What Makes It Special

Unlike a typical academic conference, the Festival della Mente takes over the entire town — events happen in piazzas, churches, theatres, and cloisters. Past speakers have included Nobel laureates, acclaimed novelists, and world-renowned architects. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming — you might find yourself at a neuroscience talk in a 15th-century fortress followed by a jazz concert in the main square.

While most talks are in Italian, the festival has been increasingly adding English-language events. Even if you don’t speak Italian, the setting alone — Sarzana’s perfectly preserved medieval centre — is worth the trip.

Practical Info

  • Tickets: Most individual talks cost €5-8. A festival pass (€35) gives access to all events. Book online in advance — popular talks sell out fast.
  • Getting there: Sarzana is 20 minutes by train from La Spezia, 1 hour from Genoa. The station is a 10-minute walk from the historic centre.
  • Where to stay: Book accommodation early — Sarzana is small and fills up completely. Staying in nearby Cinque Terre or La Spezia and taking the train in works well.
  • Food: Don’t miss the festival food area in Piazza Matteotti, featuring local Ligurian specialties. For a proper meal, try Sarzana’s excellent focaccerie.
