Palio Marinaro di San Pietro 2026 — Genoa’s Maritime Parade

On June 29th, Genoa celebrates its patron saint San Pietro (Saint Peter, the fisherman) with the Palio Marinaro — a day of maritime tradition, boat races, and a spectacular procession that brings the old port to life.
The Tradition
The highlight is the procession of the Cristo degli Abissi (Christ of the Abyss) — a bronze statue that’s carried from the church of San Pietro in the historic centre down to the Porto Antico, where it’s loaded onto a boat and taken out to sea for a blessing ceremony. Local fishing boats, decorated with flowers and flags, follow in a flotilla.
After the religious ceremony, the competitive side kicks in: rowing races between Genoa’s historic districts in traditional gozzi, with teams competing for the coveted Palio banner.
What to Do
- Watch the morning procession (starts ~10:00) from the Porto Antico area
- Grab seafood at one of the portside restaurants in the afternoon
- Stay for the rowing races in the late afternoon (around 17:00)
- Evening celebrations in the Boccadasse and Nervi districts with food stalls and music
