Palio Storico di Albenga 2026 — Four Ancient Quarters Battle for the Banner

Every July, the medieval heart of Albenga turns back the clock for the Palio Storico—three days when the town’s four ancient quarters compete in a spectacular festival of flag-throwing, costume parades, and a thrilling final race through the cobbled streets.

Four Quarters, One Banner

Albenga’s historic center is divided into four rioni: San Giovanni, Sant’Eulalia, San Siro, and Santa Maria. Each quarter traces its roots to the medieval city and competes fiercely for the Palio banner. The event opens on Friday evening with a costumed parade through the ancient Roman grid of streets, with drummers, flag-bearers, and contrada members in period dress.

The Competition

Saturday features skill challenges including crossbow shooting and the sbandieratori (flag-throwing) competition, where each quarter’s team executes increasingly complex choreography. Sunday is race day—a relay through Piazza San Michele and the surrounding caruggi (narrow lanes) that tests both speed and teamwork.

Why Albenga?

Albenga is one of Liguria’s most underrated destinations. Behind its modern outskirts lies a perfectly preserved Roman and medieval center—one of the best on the Riviera di Ponente. The Palio Storico weekend is the ideal time to visit: the town is at its most vibrant, with taverne (pop-up food stands) serving local specialties like zemin (chickpea and vegetable soup) and focaccia al formaggio di Recco in every piazza.

• Getting there: Albenga is on the Genoa–Ventimiglia train line, approximately 1h15 from Genoa and 30 minutes from Savona. The centro storico is a 10-minute walk from the station.
• Best time to arrive: Friday evening for the opening parade, or Saturday afternoon for the flag-throwing finals.
• Where to eat: Book ahead—restaurants in the historic center fill quickly during Palio weekend. Try Trattoria del Gallo for traditional Ligurian dishes.
• Parking: If driving, park at the large lot near the train station and walk in; the centro storico is pedestrian-only during the festival.
